The Necks
Australian cult avant-jazz trio The Necks return to Madrid after fourteen years without playing in the city. Praised by many as one of the finest post-improvisation acts in the world, The Necks are known for weaving longform pieces, oceanic compositions whose surface, seemingly rocked by the gentle swaying of calm waves, is only the visible part of a spiral triggered by subtle hidden movements. The music of Chris Abrahams (piano, Hammond organ), Tony Buck (drums, percussion and electric guitar) and Lloyd Swanton (double bass and bass guitar), ascetic yet emotionally charged, challenges and sharpens our perception, pushing us to explore the strata and folds of vast mental distances, encompassing a unique ambitus that is “not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz”. Part of their spring European tour, the concert held at Sala Villanos is an ideal opportunity to see them live, just after the release of one of their most acclaimed albums—and that’s saying a lot when it comes to them—as they reach almost forty years in the business.
